Assembly Votes Today To Destroy Tenant Rights

At 5am this morning, I found out about 9 amendments to AB183 that the Assembly will be voting on today at 1:00 or at some time after that.  Guess I better quick figure out what these amendments do . . . .

Proposal: AB183 (-1931) View Bill History
relating to: miscellaneous provisions related to rental and vehicle towing practices and eviction proceedings, prohibitions on enacting ordinances that place certain limitations or requirements on landlords, providing an exemption from emergency rule procedures, granting rule-making authority.

Can you believe the sponsor is still tweaking the bill – because there are still mistakes . . . geez, after 2 weeks he should have it all together, right!

The Dems are finally getting to do their committee work, that they weren’t allowed to do in committee because they didn’t have information they needed. So they are offering 8 amendments that do the following . . .

Here is what I think they do . .. .

AMENDMENT ONE
This one is 10 pages long.

Removes provisions about property left behind in eviction, building code violations, bed bugs, crime free language, personal service for summons and complaint, changes to sheriff procedure, preemptions, but leaves the rest of the language

AMENDMENT TWO

Removes crime language in current law

AMENDMENT THREE

Removes property left behind in eviction provisions

AMENDMENT FOUR

Removes bed bug language

AMENDMENT FIVE

Changes to property left behind in eviction – removes all the new changes

AMENDMENT SIX

Restore language about bonded movers in Milwaukee

AMENDMENT SEVEN

Removes service by mail in evictions

AMENDMENT EIGHT

Removes preemption language

AMENDMENT NINE

Requires towing service to notify law enforcement agency if they tow a car, and cleans up some other language for property left behind

I’m thinking that the legislators would benefit from some feedback about the bill and the amendment, they may not even know what it is at this point given how it was rammed through the process.  So, contact your legislators and let them know what you think!
