Community Building and Empower RFP

Community Building and Engagement RFP

Funding to support community building and engagement in civic processes was added by the Common Council in the 2015 City of Madison budget. The goal of the Community Building and Engagement funds is to build the capacity of local organizations to promote, support and sustain civic engagement by populations that are typically underrepresented in city governance and civic processes including people and populations of color and low to moderate income residents. The intent is to increase community cohesion, resident engagement and promote resident leadership capacity and skills in neighborhoods with high concentrations of low and moderate income residents, and/or designated areas assigned to City Neighborhood Resource Teams.

The City has $100,000 available for this RFP opportunity. Proposal requests should be for not less than $25,000 and not more than $100,000. There may be the possibility of continuing funding for projects for additional years, however there is no current commitment for continued funding by the Common Council.

Emerging Opportunities Program

Emerging Opportunities Program
The Emerging Opportunities Program (EOP) was established for the support of projects and activities that address emerging needs or unanticipated opportunities which arise outside of the Community Development Division’s (CDD) multi-year Purchase of Service processes. The EOP was created to allow the City to respond in a more timely manner and seize opportunities as they are presented and most viable. The EOP is also intended for new and promising organizations to receive City financial support, provided they demonstrate broad engagement in the development of the project or activity the organization proposes. Common Council allocated $275,000 for EOP funding in 2015. That funding will be distributed between two application opportunities in 2015: February and another date to be determined.

Application processes for the Spring 2015 EOP process and the Community Building and Engagement request for proposals will run concurrently. Guidelines and applications will be available on the CDD Funding Opportunities website on February 25, 2015. Applications will be due March 20, 2015 at NOON.

300 W. Dayton Street Closures

Beginning Thursday, January 22nd, JH Findorff and their subcontractors will be dismantling a tower crane adjacent to Madison Fire Station #1. This will require closing through traffic on the 300 block of West Dayton Street between North Henry Street and North Broom Street, as well as the 100 and 200 blocks of North Henry Street. The closures will occur from 7:00 AM on Thursday through the end of the work day on Sunday.

Local vehicle access to residences and the Overture Center Parking Garage on the 300 block of West Dayton Street will be maintained from the west at all times.

Pedestrian traffic will be maintained on the south side of the West Dayton Street and to all residences at all times during this street closure.

Motorists and bicyclists are encouraged to use alternate routes to avoid delays during this closure.

Permaculture Guild Visioning Sessions

I have heard folks say that they aren’t involved enough to come to a Visioning Session or to fill out the survey. I would like you all to know that no matter how big or how small your contributions, connections or participation with the Guild, you are most welcome to participate as able. Some people just lurk on this google group and occasionally post or respond, some come to an occasional meeting or workshop, some volunteer their time to table at the Expo, or teach something. All of these, and more, are part of what makes up the resiliency of a Guild.

Please come out for these 3 hour sessions this Sat. and in late February. Your input is valuable.

The dates are Saturday January 24th from 9 am until 12 pm. And, also Saturday, February 28th from 9 am until 12 pm.

First Congregational Church at:
1609 University Avenue, Madison, WI 53726

Parking in the back and on major bus routes and easily accessible by bike. We encourage car pooling if possible.,

Thanks to everyone who filled out the survey and returned it. We will share the results a the sessions and also on line very soon.

Green Downtown Program

Capitol Neighborhoods welcomes 1000 Friends of Wisconsin for a presentation as part of the Green Downtown Initiative: http://www.1kfriends.org/what-we-do/green-downtown/

The program, Great Neighborhoods: Walking for Life, will include a discussion of how traditional neighborhoods, which have physical spaces that cater to the function and aesthetics of the pedestrian, can be developed in Madison to promote human health, resource conservation, and economic resiliency. Audience participation will be a valuable part of this discussion.

Thursday, January 22, 7:00 p.m.
Madison Central Library, 3rd Floor

Low-income dental clinic closing

The Max W. Pohle dental clinic, located within Meriter Hospital, will be closing their doors at the end of June this year, but until then business will go on as usual. They will not leave anyone in the middle of treatment. If they have not already sent out letters to their patients, I’m sure one will be forthcoming very shortly to inform them of the impending changes and how they will be transferring their patients of record to Access Community Health Centers Dental Clinics. This transfer will take place this summer and as I understand it, ACHC has and is still in the process of hiring dentists in preparation for caring for this additional patient load.

There is another free dental clinic in Madison called Madison Dental Initiative, located on E. Washington Avenue. It is a small non-profit trying desperately to help serve our community’s urgent dental needs on a minuscule budget. Dentists and staff volunteer their time to treat those who do not have the funds to get dental care otherwise. They are doing as much as possible with what they have and really need as much support as our community can give them.

I am happy to answer any further questions anyone may have and if I can’t, I will direct you to the people who can answer. I hope this is helpful.
