Another Listening Session

Another listening session with neighbors of Lake View Hill tonight to discuss the occupation . . . lots of finger pointing and anger – but now that it is over, will people show up?

Neighbors:

Alder Anita Weier and Supervisor Melissa Sargent invite our neighbors and other concerned citizens to a listening session

Monday November 26th from 6-8 pm

at 1202 Northport Drive – Dane County Human Services Building (first floor)

to allow our neighbors to share their thoughts and ideas and concerns on how the encampment on Lakeview Hill affected our neighborhood, our city and our county.

*** Share and Crosspost as you wish ***

If you cannot attend this meeting please know that both Alder Weier and Supervisor Sargent take your thoughts very seriously and will pass them onto the others who need to hear them.

We have invited the following to join us:

Sheriff Mahoney or staff as delegated
County Executive Parisi or staff as delegated
Mayor Soglin or staff as delegated
Human Services Director Lynn Green or staff as delegated
Parks Director Kevin Connors or staff as delegated
MPD Captain McLay or staff as delegated

All our best:

and

I dare Parisi to show up. Seriously. He needs to face what he has allowed to happen.

FWIW, here’s Anita’s spin on this meeting:

Subject: The Occupy/Homeless encampment has been removed from Lakeview Hill

This morning Dane County deputies removed the Occupy/Homeless encampment from Lakeview Hill County Park.

Tents and equipment were taken to Token Creek County Park, and the campers were offered transportation there or to shelters. There is a porta-potty and a firepit at Token Creek Park.

The campers either kept their belongings or can pick them up at Token Creek or by arranging an appointment with county officials.

The encampment has caused much angst in nearby neighborhoods. Though residents have sympathy for homeless people, some angrily opposed the illegal encampment. Some welcomed the campers while others feared them. Many rumors also circulated about who had allowed the encampment. It was not permitted by city or county officials; the campers left 800 E. Washington Avenue and came to Lakeview Hill on a Saturday. They were organized by advocate Brenda Konkel, with
assistance from County Board Member Dorothy Krause, who represents the Fitchburg area.

There also was confusion about which law enforcement agency was in charge of county property surrounded by the city of Madison. Answers to questions and a chance to state opinions will be provided at a listening session organized by myself and County Board Member Melissa Sargent at 6 p.m. Monday, Nov. 26, at the Dane County Human Services Building, in a first floor meeting room (entrance is in the rear of the building).

Lake View Hill Park…

As you may be aware, the Dane County Sheriff’s office orchestrated the removal of the Occupy campers from Lake View Hill Park this morning. I have no first-hand information about the operation itself, but understand there were no significant incidents. The campers have been relocated to Token Creek Park, and our quiet neighborhood park has been returned to its previous state.

This protest presence has raised strong emotions on both sides of this difficult issue, and has created tension in what had been a quiet and friendly residential neighborhood. Alder Anita Weier and Dane Co. Supervisor Melissa Sargent have organized a neighborhood meeting on Monday, Nov. 26 @ 6pm. I will be on hand to speak to the MPD role in the process, to hear concerns and answer questions.

Please consider attending….
