A Game Changer for Equity Efforts?

Wow. Sad news for the City, but an opportunity for sure! Definitely Madison’s College’s gain.

Leadership Changes in Madison Department of Civil Rights

Madison Mayor Paul Soglin announced today that as Department of Civil Rights Director Lucia Nunez departs to take the lead in a similar position at Madison College, Deputy Mayor Gloria Reyes has been appointed to serve as Interim Department of Civil Rights Director.

“Lucia Nunez has been an impactful leader of the Department of Civil Rights for nearly ten years,” said Mayor Soglin. “I will miss her dedication to people of all races, gender, sexual orientation and ability, her commitment to racial equity and her compassion. I am pleased that she will be just down the road continuing her work at Madison College and I commend that institution for this hire.”

Nunez has overseen the City of Madison’s Affirmative Action Office, Disability Rights, and Equal Opportunities.
Deputy Mayor Gloria Reyes will serve as interim director until the position is permanently filled. A national search will be undertaken for Nunez’s replacement.

Bummed Lucia Nunez is leaving, but . . .

This could be an awesome opportunity for someone with fresh eyes to come in and shake things up. Not more TALK, lets see the WALK!!! Let’s reboot! Give this new person some real support and backing, a budget that works and set them loose! Or, we can do things the way we have always done (which is all Reyes can do in the interim) . . . which would be a real shame.
