2 Homeless Deaths this Weekend

4 5 since October 1, that we know about. If you know of others, make sure to get the info to MUM before tomorrow so they can be recognized in The Longest Night Homeless Person’s Memorial Service on 12/21

Finding out what happened is nearly impossible. And even when you do, there are privacy concerns and respect for the family issues, so I have few details. However, it can’t go unnoticed that there were two deaths this weekend.

Ernesto (Earnie) Noriega, 52
Alberto Garcia-Perr, 71 (perhaps Garcia-Perez, or Garcia-Kerr?)

Both were rough sleepers (sleeping outside). One was behind the Swiss Colony by the East Transfer Point, the other in the Wingra area.

Previously to this, a few weeks ago Willie Knight (sorry, not sure on the last name) passed away. And before that, Kat.

And of course, earlier this year, Anthony Minardi, was hit by a drunk driver while walking on the sidewalk at 7:30 a.m.

Other names they currently have for the event (see below):
Timothy M Maden (b. 11/28/1961; d. 09/08/2014)
Travis Walton, 1/26/76-11/9/15
Edward “Eddie” Stafford DOB 06/15/1968, Died 2015

If you know any of these folks, or others who passed away this year, please make sure to get the information to Linda Ketcham at Madison Urban Ministry by tomorrow.

We are in the process of planning this year’s Longest Night Homeless Person’s Memorial Service and want to make sure we have the names of everyone for the service, as well as any information we could use on the memorial card (name, age or dob, family, hobbies, interests, gifts, etc…) We will need the names and information no later than 12/16 to have memorial cards but can add names to the list to be read at the service up until that day.

Thank you,

Linda Ketcham

Other names can be submitted by 2:00 on Monday, they just won’t have a card.

Salvation Army will be staying open late that night so that people can attend the service.

The Longest Night:
On Monday, December 21, 2015 our community will commemorate those who have passed away this year and previous years without a home by having memorial services throughout the evening.
In an effort for our resident’s to be able to attend the services, The Women’s Shelter will increase capacity to meet the need that night and allow residents to check-in until 10pm. So, they do not need to be here at 5pm when our doors open or reserve a bed for that evening. We do not want those who wish to attend these ceremonies be in fear of not having shelter that night.
Families that will be staying with us that night may attend the ceremonies as well but ask that they notify staff ahead of time and check-in by 10pm.
Please contact me if there are any questions. Sincerely,
Carly Sobye, MSW
Housing Coordinator
