Fact Checking the N. Sherman Critics.

Posted April 3rd, 2013 @ 1:34 PM by

Madison’s Common Council voted to reconfigure N. Sherman Ave from a four-lane to a two-way with a center left turn lane. During the testimony, several issues were raised by opponents, and rehashed later on talk radio that I would like to fact-check for posterity.

“Cars First” is not a Progressive Policy Position.

Posted July 16th, 2012 @ 5:43 PM by

So-called “Progressive” talk show host John “Sly” Sylvester doubled down on the “Cars First” rhetoric last Friday, flipping his rationale from “because we pay for the roads” to “because there are more of us and we are bigger.” But is such a power-based rationale really representative of someone who claims to be a Progressive? Hell [...]

Sly Delivers Fact-Lite Screed on Bike Path Lighting

Posted July 9th, 2012 @ 4:19 PM by

Stridently declaring that “Cars come first!”, WTDY Progressive Talk host John ‘Sly’ Sylvester issued a litany of unfounded justifications for treating bike path users as second-class citizens, while questioning the motives of city traffic engineers and city workers in general as being part of a conspiracy to deliver poor service for automobile enthusiasts. Sly’s key [...]

Maybe Republicans Will Come Round on Global Warming Now?

Posted July 6th, 2012 @ 2:45 PM by

The record-setting heat we have been experiencing this week may actually help convince Republicans to change their stance on global warming. It is not the number of deaths and hospital visits caused by the heat that will convince them.  Same goes for the poor being unable to find a safe place to hang out during [...]

A Beautiful Mural on an Ugly Canvas

Posted July 3rd, 2012 @ 10:22 PM by

It seems I have stirred up a bit of a hornet’s nest over on Facebook in a thread about the beautiful mural being painted by Panmela Castro on the western Wall of the Willy Street Co-op.  The mural is gorgeous, replacing a sterile beige cinderblock wall with a broad golden ribbon, strands of crimson, and [...]

Complain About Alternative Transportation on Leap Day!

Posted February 23rd, 2012 @ 4:45 PM by

With this being a leap-year, and the great day fast approaching, I hereby declare February 29th as “Complain about alternative transportation day.”   So how about it? You’ve got a whole extra day this year. Why not spend 20 minutes of it harshing your elected officials about how hard it is for you to walk, [...]

The Purpose of Ride the Drive

Posted June 27th, 2011 @ 3:58 PM by

I have a problem with the way Mayor Soglin seems to be framing the issue of how to improve Ride the Drive.  When the Mayor talks about the situation, he portrays it as a tension between the fun of the ride and a 20-45% loss in parking ramp revenue and business.  But Ride the Drive [...]
